Spain Just Set a Blue Flag Record, and Cyprus Lost Eight Beaches

#3. Turkey: 625 eco-labels, led by Antalya

Turkey: 625 eco-labels, led by Antalya

Turkey placed third with 625 eco-labels, a total that keeps it firmly ahead of Italy and Portugal and reflects decades of investment in resort infrastructure along its southern coast.

Antalya province dominates the national picture. The stretch running from Kemer through Belek to Alanya contains one of the densest concentrations of large beach resorts anywhere in the Mediterranean, and the certification standards that come with the flag are treated as a commercial requirement rather than an environmental bonus.

The Aegean coast around Bodrum, Cesme and Fethiye contributes a substantial share as well, generally through smaller municipal beaches rather than resort operations.

Next: the country that uses a category almost nobody else does.
