Spain Just Set a Blue Flag Record, and Cyprus Lost Eight Beaches

#13. One British beach lost its flag over paperwork

One British beach lost its flag over paperwork

Not every loss is environmental. Avon Beach in Dorset lost its Blue Flag this season because of an administrative error rather than any failure of water quality, safety or facilities.

It is a useful corrective to how these lists are usually read. The award is a certification scheme with deadlines, forms and fees, and a missed submission removes the flag just as effectively as contaminated water does.

Anyone using the list to choose a beach should therefore treat an absent flag as a question rather than an answer. The presence of a flag is strong positive evidence. Its absence can mean contamination, or it can mean a municipality that did not file on time.
