The moment where Edward Lewis shows Vivian Ward a necklace for the opera and then snaps the box shut was entirely improvised. Gere came up with the idea himself and waited for Julia Roberts’ reaction. Naturally, Roberts burst into genuine laughter, making it one of the film’s most memorable scenes.
